12 Hacks to Make Your Small Kitchen Look Bigger

Not all of us are blessed with a spacious kitchen – one that has a huge countertop, a kitchen island, large appliances, big windows, and all of the other ingredients that make up your perfect dream kitchen. If you are living in New York for instance, I’m sure you are no stranger to a small kitchen. We have a few tricks up our sleeves to make your kitchen, the heart of your home, feel and look bigger.

Wondering how? Take a look at the following:

Change the Color

Repainting your kitchen area is a good start, plus it’s very affordable, especially if you are doing the job yourself. It is a simple update that can instantly create the illusion of having a bigger and brighter room as long as you know which colors to use. Pro Tip:  Try painting the wall trim and moldings using a color that is lighter than that of the walls so that the walls will appear farther back, making the room look more spacious than it really is.

Install Shallow Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are a great storage solution. However, it is essential that you position them correctly. You also have to ensure that their size is appropriate, particularly the lower ones. The standard depth size is 24 inches, but if you are working on a tiny kitchen, you may opt for the ones that are only 12 or 15 inches deep. With slimmer lower cabinets, you will have more floor space and it would be much easier for you to reach everyday items.

Throw Some Geometric Patterns

When talking about art and interior design, geometric patterns are super appealing. One advantage of using such patterns is that they also help make a room look wider. Well, there are many ways in which you can incorporate this design into your kitchen. You can make use of geometric tiles as well as a geometric patterned area rug and table cloth. Be careful though, too many patterns can also make your kitchen look cramped!

Incorporate Reflective Surfaces

Anything that reflects like glass tiles, glossy cabinets, shiny floors, stainless steel appliances, and high-gloss paint, just to mention a few, can certainly make any room appear much bigger.

Add Mirrors

Hanging a mirror in any room will reflect light and make any room appear larger.  No rules say you can’t hang a mirror in the kitchen!

Opt for Open Shelves

Removing some cabinet doors is another incredible way to make your kitchen airy and spacious. However, you should only this if your cabinets are not cluttered. Otherwise, open shelves would do the opposite – make the room look even smaller.

If you plan on doing this, make sure that the contents of your cabinets are arranged neatly. Sort things out and get rid of the clutter.

Leave the Windows Bare

Blinds and curtains are great, but if you are aiming to make your kitchen bigger and brighter, it is highly recommended that you set them aside.  Let the sunshine in and keep the windows simple, clean, and clear of obstruction.

Install a Single Sink

While having a double sink is good, it is not advisable if you have a tiny kitchen as it will only take up too much space. For this reason, you should opt for a single sink. Doing so will free up more space and give you more room for your countertops.

Tidy Up Your Countertops

If you have a small kitchen, being organized is very important. Instead of leaving a lot of stuff on your countertops, keep it in the cabinets, even extra appliances that you don’t use very often. Just leave a vase or perhaps a bowl of fresh fruits to make the spot more attractive. Other than that, keep everything else away.

Utilize Cabinet Lighting

Lighting is a vital component of any room. And when it comes to making a kitchen look larger, you should be creative with your lighting! Instead of leaving your kitchen cabinets dark, install some lights. Add some lights underneath wall cupboards or even at the base of floor units.

Try the Minimalist Look

To create the illusion of more space in your kitchen, you should avoid lots of ornaments and overly decorative details. Make sure that the surfaces are always clear and each of your kitchen essentials has a storage space.

Knock Down a Wall

If you really need more space, you can consider knocking a wall down and extend your kitchen – we’ve all heard the term “open-concept” by now. Consider taking down a wall, or half a wall, depending on how much additional room you would want to have. Use the half wall for additional cabinet storage and a breakfast bar – either way this will open up the kitchen to the rest of your house making everything look bigger.

There are many things that you can do to make a smaller kitchen appear bigger and brighter, and the hacks that we have highlighted above are ones that we’ve tested out ourselves. You don’t need to spend thousands or hire a contractor, you can do most of these small adjustments yourself for big results. Step one is to think of smart storage solutions to declutter your kitchen so the heart of your home will be airy and spacious.

Do you have any kitchen enhancing tips?  We’d love to hear them!
